Ryan Murphy


A native of Canada, Ryan Murphy is a qualified biology and chemistry teacher who has worked at some of the best international schools around the world. As a high school student, he attended Pearson College in Vancouver, which is an IB school and it is the only United World College member school in Canada.

Following his graduation from Pearson, Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and a master’s degree in marine biology at Memorial University in Newfoundland. Prior to becoming a teacher, Ryan worked on environmental and conservation projects in Ghana and Cambodia.

As an IB teacher for over 10 years, he has worked in boarding schools in Canada, India and Japan and has taught a range of courses which include IB Biology, IB Chemistry, IB Environmental Systems (ESS), IB Marine Science, IB Physics and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

In addition to his teaching roles in the IBDP and MEXT systems, Mr Murphy has served as the Head of Biodiversity & Sustainability at UWC Mahindra College and Head of Science at UWC ISAK Japan of these schools are members of the United World College system.

Ryan thoroughly enjoys teaching and learning through outdoor leadership, experiential curricula, and scientific inquiry. He is also actively involved in activities that add value to the curriculum, such as monitoring wildlife and medicinal plants and researching renewable energy.
