Cross-curricular Projects at NUCB International College's Bridging Programme
NUCB International College recently implemented a cross-curricular project as part of its Bridging Programme, a preparatory course designed to assist students in transitioning smoothly to boarding education. The three-month programme targets students who have completed junior high school by March of the entry year, focusing on enhancing their language skills. The project, titled "Building a Theme Park," involved collaboration across multiple subjects, including English, Visual Arts, Music, Mathematics, and Business Management.
In the Music class, students explored the connection between different elements of music and the atmosphere they create. Through engaging discussions using the case method approach, the students examined Disneyland as a case study. By listening to each other's perspectives, they discovered that different sections of the park generate distinct themes, with music playing a crucial role in establishing the desired ambience. Subsequently, they devised their own unique theme park concepts, dividing the class into four areas. Each participant proposed a shop concept that harmonized with the atmosphere of their designated area, while also working on the interior and exterior design, product selection, costumes, and creating a melody for their respective shops.
The "Building a Theme Park" project extended beyond the Music class and involved collaboration with the Visual Arts, English, Mathematics, and Business Management classes. In the Art class, students crafted shop models and utilized clay to create products. Meanwhile, the English class focused on developing English language skills by designing advertising posters. The Business Management class delved into product packaging strategies to attract customers, generating a variety of distinctive and imaginative packaging designs. In the Mathematics class, participants drafted a comprehensive plan to create three-dimensional packages, engaging in a trial-and-error process to determine the appropriate dimensions and paper shapes required to construct their desired packages.
To culminate the programme, students presented their achievements, including the interdisciplinary "Building a Theme Park" project, at an exhibition attended by their parents. Participating students expressed great satisfaction, stating that they not only improved their English proficiency in preparation for the college programme, but also thoroughly enjoyed the creative lessons. Parents who visited the exhibition likewise expressed their gratitude, remarking on the invaluable memories their children had made during the three-month preparation course. They commended the school for providing a fulfilling school and dormitory experience even before the start of formal classes. The exhibition presentation was a resounding success.
