Selected NUCB International College students visit prestigious London (UCL) and Cambridge Universities in the U.K.
In mid-July 2023, three students from NUCB International College (NIC) joined the "UCL - Japan Youth Challenge 2023," a 10-day exchange programme for about 100 Japanese and British high school students. Dr Shinichi Onuma, a Professor of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL), led this Japan-UK exchange initiative, featuring lectures from UCL and Cambridge University professors, research exchanges, collaborative activities between Japanese and British students, and talks on urban development by the mayor of Camden, a district in central London.
Ms Narita, a first-year high school student in the program, explained, "I applied to change my fear of failure and take initiative. Initially, I struggled to ask questions in front of a large audience or converse with British lecturers in imperfect English. Overcoming this fear, asking questions, and making friends showed me the power of courage. Thanks to my daily active learning at NIC and the case method based classes, I was able to feel that I had acquired the ability to participate in learning proactively, even in a new setting, and this gave me confidence." She went on to chew on her own significant change and growth. I gained confidence in proactive learning even in new settings."
The programme aims to groom globally active Japanese individuals. The 2023 edition focused on "Resilience," offering diverse lectures and activities. Mr Horiuchi, a G10 NIC student, said, "Facing challenges taught me to not only find solutions but also learn from past mistakes. Teamwork was emphasized, showing me that understanding teammates and the situation is key to ethical leadership, rather than dictating solutions. This reshaped my perspective on leadership."
In addition, three students from NIC conceived and led a surprise project for the programme committee and produced a thank-you video involving all the Japanese and English participants. Ms Ishii (a G10 student at NIC) said: "In the process of proposing a plan to people with different languages, cultures, and upbringings, and getting them to empathize and become friends, I was conscious of 'involving everyone without leaving anyone behind. Through this experience, I learned that a leader is a person who is open and honest, who treats everyone in a friendly manner, who is not afraid to make mistakes, and who is able to reflect on the good and the bad without fear of failure. The three students did not stop at knowledge but rather created their own opportunities to put their learning into practice, and they seemed to enjoy the challenges and gain confidence through the programme.
NUCB International College, which opened in Nisshin City, Aichi Prefecture, in September 2022, provides an environment where students with diverse experiences from Japan and abroad can learn together, with the aim of developing world-class leaders. The school was approved by Aichi Prefecture as an "Article One" school and all classes except the Japanese language are conducted in English (approved as a special exception school for education by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). As of December 12, 2022, the school was certified as an IB World School, becoming the first international boarding school in the Tokai region and one of the few in Japan.
NIC, which will be in its second year of operation from September 2023, will have students from approximately 20 countries in its first and second terms. In addition, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) will begin in the second year of high school. At the boarding school, where students from diverse backgrounds study and live together, students develop an international mindset while engaging in friendly competition both academically and personally, and honing their skills as global leaders of the future.
NIC Advantages
NUCB International College is designed to provide a world-class education with excellent facilities and a rich natural environment, on its 200-acre campus, in Nisshin city, Japan.
Excellence in Education
The case method, first developed at Harvard Business School in 1922 and now commonly used in elite academic institutions worldwide, is incorporated into the teaching approaches for leadership education at NIC. Small classes enable personalised supervision by multinational faculty members with master's or doctoral degrees and faculty from affiliated top business schools. In addition, the Summer School for prospective students (July) and a preparatory course (the Bridging Programme) for September admission are also offered.
Safe Boarding Environment
The school provides a safe and secure co-educational boarding environment with reference to international boarding standards. 'House Supervisors', who are well versed in psychological and health management, provide daily support and regular individual counselling to ensure optimal support and guidance for each student. Through living together with peers from different cultures and experiences, students develop the qualities required of the next generation of leaders.
