Pre-IB Programme
Who are you and what is your background?
My name is Kohei and I am from Hong Kong. But my parents are both from Japan. I have been studying in international schools my whole life and have been exposed to many different cultures, which I would say have definitely shaped my mindset and personality to be more open towards everyone.
What do you want to do after graduating from NIC?
I wish to become a teacher and gain public speaking skills and more knowledge on many subjects and topics, then become a politician after I make a name for myself in that area. Currently, however, I have no idea where my dream university is going to be.
What led you to choose Japan and NIC for your education?
I always wanted to study in Japan and experience my roots as I have always lived in Hong Kong. When I first learned of NIC, I was very excited to come here as the teachers all seemed great and the school itself took on the IB and case method approach. Which I believe would have been beneficial for me.
The school also provides support for future careers and goals, which I believe is also a huge benefit since when first arrived I had little to no plan for what I wanted to do in the future.
Did you have any apprehension regarding your new life as a boarder before coming to NIC? If yes, on what aspect? If no, why?
If I will be honest, I did not have any worries regarding becoming a boarding school student. As much as it was my first time having any sort of experience with it, before my flight to Japan, my mother lectured me on stress and worriedness. Telling me how it all depended on how the brain interpreted that information. That helped me change my mindset and look forward to everything instead of being worried.
Was it challenging to get used to living at NIC? How did you overcome these challenges?
Getting used to NIC was not challenging at all. Thanks to the students who have already experienced NIC longer than me (Bridging program students), I was able to learn and ask any questions regarding NIC life to them whenever I had any troubles. My peers were very friendly and helpful, answering any questions I may have had.
What do you usually do in your free time?
As there are only a few hours of free time every day after all the studies and work is done, I use my free time very carefully, trying to get my everyday chores done before I proceed to play any games.
I'm not perfect however and I still need to get used to self-management, controlling myself to make sure I indeed do get everything done before I read or play games.
What is your favourite school subject and why?
I personally enjoy all of the subjects. All of the teachers are very intelligent in their own unique way and are very friendly, helping me out at any moment when I have any issues. Since there isn't any subject where the teacher goes on and on about a topic, leaving us students behind pondering what the teacher talked about, I believe all the school subjects are my favourite.
What is your best memory so far and why?
So far my best memory of this school has been the weekends when I sit with my friends and enjoy the calm outside. As NIC is surrounded by nature you are able to hear a lot of insects and feel the cold wind blowing on you. It is very relaxing and can be a great way to let off some stress.
