NIC Students Participate in the University Festival

On Saturday, October 19th, 2024, NUCB International College students participated in the 72nd Nagoya University of Commerce and Business School Festival, known as the Sagamine Festival, as part of CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service), a required subject in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Grade 10 students set up various booths to spread awareness of the SDGs, while Grade 11 and 12 students set up food and drink stalls. In addition, G12 students who chose the IB subject Music HL (Higher Level) planned and managed a 60-minute live music show, where 32 students from all grades performed various songs.

Students at NIC take IB courses in Grades 11 and 12. From Grade 10, each course actively incorporates learning activities to help students understand the basic principles of the IB and the characteristics of the subjects. Since they entered in September, G10 students studied the relevance of the SDGs in their own daily lives during home economics class to understand international social issues. Each group tried to figure out how to help more people understand the SDGs and put them into practice to solve global issues. At this school festival, they operated booths with games, quizzes, and other fun learning experiences.

CAS is an 18-month required component of the IBDP in which each student plans creative activities, physical activities, or service activities. Many students have difficulties coming up with ideas for service activities, especially those that can help others. Therefore, we provided the opportunity for G11 and G12 students to open their own stalls. For this event, students worked together in all processes, including product selection, price setting, revenue management, and procurement of goods. By emulating running their own business, students acquired valuable experiences that can help them in their entrepreneurial futures. In addition, four students who volunteer at a local animal shelter as another CAS activity came up with the idea to place donation boxes in all the booths, including those of university students. The money raised will be donated to the local animal shelter. Other students took this chance to raise money for local children's homes and introduce customers to how they can help make a difference in their community.

G12 Music HL (High Level) students planned and organized a 60-minute music stage performance. Students began preparations 11 months in advance and experienced the entire process of bringing a music stage to life from scratch. This includes recruiting performers, structuring the programme, setting and conducting rehearsal dates and times, arranging instrument transportation, meeting with the sound staff, and gathering an audience. The students, who planned and managed the concert by themselves for the first time, faced many situations where things did not go according to plan, but they overcame them by correcting their course and eventually succeeded with 32 participants. After successfully completing the performance, one student commented, “It was much harder than I had imagined to organize the other participants and hold meetings with people involved in various fields while also practicing my own performance. Even so, I am very happy that we were able to successfully complete the stage".

Learning at NIC is not just about acquiring knowledge, but also about practical learning to acquire all the skills that will be important throughout life, such as the ability to think for themselves, find and solve problems, communicate, and collaborate with others in a considerate manner. In school events like this one, students will acquire the ability to live a life that will be useful in the future through experiences that are difficult to obtain in the regular classroom.
