NUCB International College Holds Annual Ski Trip In Furano, Hokkaido

NUCB International College held its annual ski trip in mid-December, 2024. This year, the students visited Furano, which attracts an increasing number of tourists from North America, Australia, and Asia because of its excellent snow quality, among other places in Hokkaido. Students enjoyed skiing and snowboarding under the guidance of foreign instructors while enjoying the superb powder snow.

Students from 23 countries joined this trip, some of whom had already gained experience in winter sports at ski resorts in Japan and abroad, while others were newbies who were experiencing the snow for the first time. They were divided into groups according to their experience and skills. During their stay, Furano had continuous snowfall, and the students were excited to see the silvery white world covered with fresh snow, which they could never see in Aichi Prefecture, where the school campus is located.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding activities on the slopes, the students received a special lecture from the Furano Tourism Association and learned about how to utilize Furano's tourism resources, as well as trends and issues in inbound tourism. Students learned that although tourist facilities such as ski resorts and movie locations tend to be the focus of attention as attractions of Furano, industries such as agriculture and livestock farming created by the region's natural environment, climate, history, and culture are important factors attracting people from all over the world.

As an optional tour for students interested in activities other than skiing and snowboarding, we visited Biei-cho, which is well-known as a representative landscape of Hokkaido. In Biei, the students experienced snow trekking by putting on snowshoes, “Seiyo Kanjiki,” which are used to walk around freely on the soft snow. Whether the terrain was flat or sloping, we were able to enjoy the hilly landscape of Biei unique to winter as we pushed through the deep snow with snowshoes under the guidance of our guides, sinking where we stepped and getting buried as we went. This training, in which participants engaged in a variety of activities together with their peers, enthusiastically interacting with snow, making new discoveries, and broadening their knowledge and experience, must have been an unforgettable experience for them.
