Poom

Hello! My name is Poom and I am currently in Grade 10 at NIC. I participated in the 2023 Summer School.

Why did you choose to join the NIC Summer School?

I was recommended the NIC Summer School by my kindergarten teache who told my parents about this programme. That summer I had no plans so I wanted to do something and I was always interested to find out about Japan. At that time I knew about NIC and I thought if I went to Summer School I could get an idea about what the school is like and experience life at a Japanese boarding school.

What is your best memory of NIC Summer School?

Probably at night in my room, because I got really good roommates and we were always having fun conversations. I have to admit we even got into a bit of trouble at night because we wouldn’t stop talking and it could get a little loud.

What do you think about the Case Method learning approach?

I was in an IB school when I lived in Thailand so I was familiar with the case method.  When I came to NIC, the learning style wasn’t too different from my old school so it was easier for me to adjust to my new environment.

Which aspect or point of NUCB International College is the most interesting for you?

During the summer school, we got a short glimpse of Japanese Archery. I remember seeing bits of it on the NIC website and I really wanted to try that out so I was happy that for Summer School we got to do that. The archery teacher Naruse-sensei told us that if we joined the school we would have more chances to do Japanese Archery and improve our skills.

What advice would you give to a student thinking about joining NIC Summer School?

Bring your own alarm clock and your own charging port. I didn’t know I had to bring my own alarm clock but all my roommates did so I had to rely on them and luckily their alarm clocks were loud. Also, be prepared to meet people from different nationalities. As soon as I walked in there were people who were Japanese, German, or Chinese, but they could all speak English. So as long as you can speak English and everyone else can then everything will be fine!

How did joining the NIC Summer School help you when you applied to NIC?

One of the advantages was that I knew some of the teachers already and they remembered me so I could be more comfortable. I also already knew the layout of the dormitory and the school so that helped me settle in.
