NUCB International College "International House" Awarded the 2023 Good Design

The International House at NUCB International College received the 2023 Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. NUCB International College is one of the few schools in Japan to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and to practice international education in a boarding school setting. The environmentally symbiotic "International House" surrounded by lush natural landscaping, was designed to accommodate a variety of students from Japan and abroad. It is a place for leadership education where diverse individuals can live together comfortably while stimulating each other with new ideas and unique insights. Dormitory rooms are arranged in a radial pattern on the outside of the circular building, offering a panoramic view of the undulating campus. The buildings also has shared multipurpose spaces for students to gather with their peers which help create a sense of connectedness in communal living.

Good Design Award 2023 Jury's Evaluation

The new circular international dormitory is beautifully integrated with the existing arc-shaped school building, creating a sense of unity. The dormitory rooms are arranged around the perimeter of the circle, and all rooms have large openings from which one can view the abundant nature. The most distinctive feature is the inner part of the circle. The multipurpose space in front of the dormitory rooms, which is also a common corridor, is designed to be deep and spacious so that communication can be fostered naturally in daily life. The greenery gently reflected in the glass and the circular courtyard of the campus, which changes its expression according to the seasons, will be a memorable scene for students who spend a period of their lives in this dormitory system.

What Is The Good Design Award?

The Good Design Award, originally established in 1957 under the name Good Design Product Selection, is a social movement that evaluates and promotes designs representing Japan. As a global design award with the participation of many domestic and international companies and organizations, it is held annually with the aim of improving the quality of life and utilizing design to solve social issues and themes. The "G Mark", the symbol of the award, is widely known as a symbol of excellent design.

Excellence in Education

Established in September 2022, NUCB International College is a coeducational boarding school accepting a wide range of students from Japan and abroad. The school practices early leadership education in a diverse environment. NIC is a MEXT Accredited High School and IB World School, allowing students to graduate with both an IB diploma and Japanese high school diploma. The school's education is characterized by the adoption of the "case method", which was developed by Harvard Business School in 1922 as a teaching method for leadership education. It is still practiced by elite academic institutions around the world, to cultivate not only academic ability but also leadership that can be used in an international society. Classes are small, with a maximum of 25 students per class to encourage individual student support, and are all taught by multinational faculty members with master's or doctoral degrees as well as international faculty members from affiliated internationally accredited business schools.
