Pre-IB Programme
Who are you and what is your background?
I'm Reika from Japan. I'm half Indonesian and Japanese. I use to go to an international school in Indonesia for about 4 years and moved to Japan at the start of 4th grade.
What do you want to do after graduating from NIC?
For now, I have not decided what I want to be in the future or which university I want to go to. So before I graduate from NIC I will use this time to try and find out what I want to be in the future. Also, I feel like the teachers will really help me find what I'm passionate about since they all have so many life experiences.
What led you to choose Japan and NIC for your education?
I chose this school because, in the future, I want to study abroad and I thought that I should improve my English before going abroad. Also, this school was new so I thought that it would be a great chance for me to help be a part of building something. I also wanted to try the IB Diploma because it is a difficult course that can help me prepare for college and hopefully make my transition to college easier.
Did you have any apprehension regarding your new life as a boarder before coming to NIC? If yes, on what aspect? If not, why?
Yes, I had some anxiety when I came since this is my first time as a boarder. I have also never been away from my family and home for a long time so I was scared if I would be ok in the boarding life but now everything has been really great and I have been able to overcome that anxiety.
Was it challenging to get used to living at NIC? How did you overcome these challenges?
For me, it was not that challenging getting used to life at NIC, because everyone is friendly and it is very fun to live in the boarding house. If we do have problems we learn that we can always talk to our friends, boarding house supervisors, or mentors and they help us solve our problems.
What do you usually do in your free time?
In my free time, I usually watch Netflix or Youtube, or we go outside and play sports with everybody or go out with my friends.
What is your favourite school subject and why?
My favourite subject is PE because we get to do unique fun sports for example we can play golf or try Japanese archery which has been really great experience.
What is your best memory so far and why?
My best memory is the Sagamine Festival because we got to meet a lot of people from the University and surrounding communities and we shared what we learned in our classes with them. For example, we learned about SDGs so we made a game that taught the meaning and reasons for those SDGs. It was a very fun event!
What is the best advice you can give to anyone considering applying to NIC?
I think that before coming to NIC you should study English and practice your writing skills so it will be easy to follow along in the classes. And good luck!
