  • Name: Shinya
  • Country: Japan/Canada

Who are you and what is your background?

I'm Shinya Crane and I come from Canada. I'm half Japanese and Canadian and came to NIC from Canada.

What do you want to do after graduating from NIC?

My dream is to become a successful entrepreneur in the future and I would really like to be able to go to a well-renowned Business school for my further education studies.

What led you to choose Japan and NIC for your education?

I wanted to regain my Japanese language abilities by immersing myself in a Japanese environment and meeting Japanese peers, as well as improving my education through the IBDP at NIC.

Did you have any apprehension regarding your new life as a boarder before coming to NIC? If yes, on what aspect? If no, why?

I was worried about feeling homesick, and I thought I would miss my family too much and become upset living so far away from her. Although I do miss my family often, I've made many friends here that help make me forget about this homesickness and allow me to enjoy boarding life more.

Was it challenging to get used to living at NIC? How did you overcome these challenges?

I don't think it was really challenging, although I had to become more responsible considering I have to live with roommates in the boarding house and keep my area more clean in consideration of my roommates.

What do you usually do in your free time?

I usually head to the first floor of the boarding house and chat with the other students.

What is your favourite school subject and why?

My favourite subject at NIC so far was Home Economics because I really liked our teacher, Mr Goi. I also like Japanese classes because Taki-sensei is very friendly and I'm eager to learn and improve my Japanese.

What is the best advice you can give to anyone considering applying to NIC?

Be prepared to work hard. There's quite a lot of work but you will also find a lot of free time throughout the week to relax so don't be too nervous about the workload.
